Small and medium scale businesses have applauded government for announcing plans to start enforcing business licensing for distribution of poultry and poultry products in the country.
The decision follows concerns from small scale business that poultry producing companies have been monopolizing the industry by invading local markets with chickens.
In January minister of Trade Sosten Gwengwe directed that producing companies should only concentrate on selling live poultry from their production facilities and leave all distribution and retailing to Malawian traders and farmers.
In this regard the ministry started issuing distributorโ€™s license to poultry distributors and travelling wholesalerโ€™s license to large poultry producers and enforcement will commence from 23rd August 2021.
In an interview with MIJ FM Killy Msukwa executive director of African invest in Africa business consult said the move will help to safeguard an inclusive growth of the entire poultry chain by addressing anticompetitive and unfair trade displayed by large poultry producers in trading centres.
