Alert issued on gambling status

Calls are being intensified for the inspection of gambling centers in order to reduce the participation of under-aged persons on gambling activities.

The call follows a directive by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority – MAGLA to restrict broadcasters from airing betting and lotteries adverts between 6am and 9pm.

According to MAGLA, the move aims to reduce the exposure of children and vulnerable groups to gambling related content.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Memory Chisenga, a child rights advocate has described the decision as timely saying gambling among children influences them to indulge in immoral practices like theft.

Currently, Malawi has over 10 licensed betting companies that contribute to government revenue through taxes.

However, authorities have reminded operators to ensure that all advertisements carry clear disclaimers discouraging underage gambling.
