The Malawi Congress Party has disclosed that president Lazarus Chakwera will compete on the party’s ticket ahead of 2025 elections, a stance an expert says may trigger more uncertainty over the Tonse Alliance.
The recent stance has been said by MCP’ s vice president responsible for the north Harry Mkandawire who said the party’s executive has made a resolution and there is nothing to hide about the development.
The development comes at a time when there is uncertainty in the Tonse led government over its agreement over leadership.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Mkandawire said the party has decided that it would want Chakwera to be the presidential candidate.
Mkandawire further said it is high time that the party’s supporters started loving each in order to promote unity.
But a political analyst says such remarks put the Tonse Alliance in a dangerous predicament.
Concurring with Mkandawire, Joseph Chavula, regional chairperson for North south region said it was agreed at a 2018 convention that if Chakwera becomes a president he has to be in power for two terms as stipulated in the country’s constitution.
Chavula said a convention to elect the party’s torch bearer will be conducted ahead of 2030 elections after the expiry of Chakwera’s two terms.
However, Victor Chipofya junior a political analyst says time has come for Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima to disclose their alliance agreement to Malawians in the wake of talk about who will be the torchbearer for the alliance in the next elections.
