Calls escalate on addressing suicide cases in Malawi

Connect Plus Resource Institute (CPRI) is urging urgent action as suicide cases continue to rise in Malawi.
Mwafulirwa: Change is needed.

The institute’s call comes amid growing concern over an increase in suicide incidents, which are claiming lives, devastating families, and weakening communities.

CPRI says suicide is preventable but requires commitment, resources, leadership, and timely action.
Dennis Mwafulirwa, Founder and Clinical Social Worker for CPRI, told MIJ Online that mental health services need to be strengthened in communities, schools, workplaces, and health facilities adding that more Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Clinicians, and Counsellors are needed.
Mwafulirwa noted that while Malawi has key policies such as the Mental Health Policy (2020), the National Suicide Prevention Implementation Framework (2023), and the Mental Health Act (2025), policies alone are not enough to save lives.
The institute is also recommending renaming Zomba Mental Hospital to Zomba Wellness Hospital to reduce stigma and improve access to services.
