Government says the new disaster risk management law will come into effect from the 1st of November to replace a legislation that Malawi had been using since 1991.
The law which outlines marshal-based directions of relocation and setting up of relief homes has been highly touted as one means to end effects of natural disasters.
Speaking to MIJ FM, Charles Kalemba, Commissioner for Department of Disaster Management Affairs, said the law will now help them relocate people in flood prone areas into safe lands.
He said among other things, the law has stipulated fines of over 50 Million Kwacha and five-year jail terms for those who breach it.
In reaction, Enock Chizuzu Member of Parliament for Nsanje North Constituency one of the areas that is mostly affected by floods has hinted on setting up deliberate sensitization campaigns around the areas.
