The ministry of trade and industry is assessing the second-round crop estimates before issuing exports license for agricultural products, amid reports of massive crop smuggling to neighboring countries.
The sentiments have been made as government is yet to open Mchinji, Dedza and Mwanza one stop border posts while the construction of Songwe border post is yet to commence aimed at putting to rest smuggling of products.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Mark Katsonga, minister of trade said it is a serious concern to note that there is too much smuggling of goods being facilitated by unpatriotic Malawians.
Katsonga appealed to the country’s security agencies to vigilantly monitor the movement of goods outside the country to curb the malpractice.
He further said his ministry has limited issuance of exports license for agricultural products to assess the current crop estimates.
