Minibus owners, Govt in talks over tollgate fees protest

Minibus Owners Association of Malawi has said it is holding discussions with government on its planned stay away over toll gate fees.

The disclosure from Coxley Kamange, Secretary general of Moam comes as the association announced that its members will hold a stay away from Monday demanding for a reduction in toll gate fees.

However, Kamange said the plans to hold the demonstration are still on but the association has been discussing with the minister of finance on their demand.

Kamange said if there is no tangible agreement between the two sides by end of business today – the stay away will proceed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Moam has taken to task some councils that are collecting levies from minibus operators.

In an interview, Peter Mvalo Chairperson for Moam, said minibus operators are being asked to pay levies in the ranges of K500 to K1000 in Ntcheu, Balaka, Mulanje, Thyolo, Dedza and Phalombe among others districts.

Mvalo has described the development saying minibus operators are already paying other taxes to government.
