The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says the inland examination centers has helped curb smuggling and significantly increased revenue collected from imports.
This was disclosed during a media familiarization tour to Blantyre Inland examination center, one of the two such facilities in Malawi used for further examination of imported goods into the country after border entry.
Moses Masina, Deputy Commissioner for MRA and Station Manager responsible for Blantyre inland examination center said the facility has helped to combat technical smuggling where some importers under declare goods among others in order to evade tax.
According to Masina, MRA has been using the inland examination facilities to conduct further inspections of imported cargo containers, therefore collecting more revenue from import duty and penalties charged on under declared or misclassified goods.
