The Ministry of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism says it will begin rolling out the Malawi National Single Window (MNSW) in January 2026.
The window is a digital platform aimed at simplifying and modernizing how traders interact with government agencies when importing or exporting goods.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Patrick Botha spokesperson for the ministry said the ministry is spearheading the initiative with support from the World Bank through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP).
He explained that the system will allow traders to apply for import, export, and transit permits through a single online portal, replacing the current process where traders move between several government offices, reducing processing time from 14 days to about 72 hours.
At Kamuzu International Airport, Rodrick Patel, Matrak Freight Services operations manager welcomed the development, saying it will speed up border processes and improve trade efficiency.
However, he urged the ministry to clear the existing backlog of import licence applications, especially for second-hand clothes, which he said remains a major concern for traders.
The ministry has since met clearing agents in Lilongwe and Malawi Revenue Authority staff to brief them on the operation of the new system
