The United Nations says that Malawians’ growing awareness of prosperity is driving stronger demands for accountability, putting more pressure on leaders to perform.
The remarks were made at the Malawi Cabinet Retreat in Mangochi under the theme “Building a Resilient Economy: Accountable Governance and Strategic Partnerships for Malawi’s Transformation.”
Ahuna Eziakomwa, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator, and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa, said Malawi’s transformation is not only possible but within reach, adding that the cabinet is capable of delivering.
She said Malawi stands at a critical crossroads, facing challenges like fiscal imbalances, rising debt, foreign exchange shortages, and food insecurity while also holding opportunities amid growing public expectations.
She emphasized that Malawi should position itself in Africa not as a dependent country, but as a destination for investment.
In her remarks, Dr. Jane Ansa, Vice President of Malawi, said President Peter Mutharika has placed his trust and hope in the cabinet to rise up and support him in building and delivering morale.
She added that the ministers are the only team he has entrusted to help realize his vision for morale.
Ansa said, “Honourable Ministers and Deputy Ministers, I urge you to recall the campaigns and promises you made to the citizens. You asked for their trust to serve in government, and now that we hold office, it is time to turn those promises into action.”
