A vacancy for the post of Assistant Librarian has arisen in the Academics department of the Malawi Institute of Journalism tenable in Blantyre.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this position is to meet the needs of students by presenting a positive image of the library through delivery of a friendly, courteous and efficient service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate must possess:
- a Diploma in Library and Information Science from a recognized Institution.
- at least three (3) years of practical experience in library work with integrated library systems.
- Knowledge in communication trends and
- Working knowledge of computer hardware and software systems (demonstrated knowledge of Dewey Decimal System and Library of Congress Classification System preferred)
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The candidate must be:
- a hard worker and able to work well with students of diverse backgrounds
- a team player and able to work with minimum supervision
- organized and ready to work odd hours
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The ideal candidate will be expected to:
- Maintain a high degree of customer service at all times.
- Responsible for circulation desk duties, including but not limited to:
- Checking-in, checking-out, renewing and reserving library
- Registering and updating
- Promote Library events and programs to
- Assist patrons looking for materials on the shelves, needing assistance at the Online Public Access Catalogues, reference computer workstations and circulation
- Perform light mends on library materials as time
- Maintain the general appearance of the public areas of the library; including but not limited to: display maintenance and tidying the reading
- Read shelves on a regular basis, checking for items that are mis-shelved or in need of
- Provide Readers’ Advisory service to patrons.
- Other lawful duties as assigned from time to time.
