Malawi seeking debt relief

Authorities have made an appeal to international development partners to consider relieving least developed countries of their debt burden.

Delegates share presents.

This appeal comes on the heels of the 2023/24 Human Development Report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which paints a grim picture of the global economy since 2018.

The report highlights the devastating impact of global shocks, including COVID-19 and cyclones, on developing countries.

Despite rich nations managing to recover their economies, developing countries continue to struggle, making it challenging to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking to MIJ Online, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, emphasized the need for development partners to consider debt relief for least developed countries.

Tembo stressed the importance of collective effort to revamp Malawi’s economy and achieve the SDGs.

Meanwhile, Fenella Frost, Resident Representative for UNDP, echoed the need to work together to support developing countries like Malawi, which are still grappling with economic recovery.
