African nations urged to enforce taxation systems

The African Tax Administration Forum says governments must demonstrate how tax revenue benefits citizens to improve tax compliance across Africa.

The remarks were made at a meeting in Salima, where African revenue authorities have gathered to discuss efforts to improve revenue collection and share experiences on challenges facing the sector.

In an interview with MIJ Online, Emeka Nwankwo, Head of Domestic Tax Capacity Enhancement at the African Tax Administration Forum, said people are more willing to pay taxes when they see the benefits through public services and development projects.

He said the government must ensure that citizens feel the impact of the taxes they pay.

Meanwhile, Dr Stella Manyenje, Director of Tax Investigation at the Malawi Revenue Authority, says the forum plays an important role in supporting reforms at the authority, including efforts to improve tax compliance.

The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) is a pan-African network that helps member countries improve their tax systems, boost domestic resource mobilization, and share knowledge between tax authorities.
