The Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) signs an MOU with the Centre for Democracy and Elections (CEDE).

In anticipation of increased and meaningful participation in Malawi’s September 2025 general election, the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) and the Centre for Democracy and Elections (CEDE) have formalized their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic partnership aims at enhancing their capacity, outreach, and impact in planned electoral support activities, aligning with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) electoral calendar.

In the MOU are collaborative efforts between MIJ and CEDE to achieve enhanced citizen participation through joint research, training, civic education, and advocacy, as well as citizens empowerment to actively engage in governance and elections, with a focus on promoting informed decision-making and fostering election integrity.

“We, at MIJ, are excited to partner with CEDE — an organization with specialists in democracy, elections, and governance. This collaboration will significantly enhance MIJ’s programs for the Malawi 2025 general elections,” said Dr. Levi Phelani, the MIJ Executive Director, at the signing ceremony.

On his part, Aloisious Nthenda, who is the CEDE’s Technical Specialist said: CEDE is delighted to sign this MOU with MIJ. Our combined efforts will strengthen outreach for awareness, training, and advocacy related to electoral programs.”

In conclusion, the signing of the MOU marks a significant step toward increased collaboration and information sharing between MIJ and CEDE. Together, we are committed to mobilizing voters, candidates/aspirants, and political parties, ensuring their effective participation throughout the entire electoral process. By aligning our efforts, we aim to support the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in conducting transparent, credible, and accessible elections in 2025.
