The office of the Attorney General says it does not have powers to suspend some sections of the Value Added Tax Amendments Act, 2021.
The stand by Thabo Chaka Nyirenda Attorney General comes as Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has through its lawyer, has written the office of the AG- demanding suspension of some sections of the Act.
In a letter HRDC argues that some sections of the Act- affect the actualization of people’s rights to economic activity, equality, financial inclusion and dignity.
However- speaking to Online, Nyirenda said there are a number of stakeholders involved in the formulation of a Taxation Act- including MRA, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Justice.
But the AG said his office does not have powers to suspend the operations of the law- when it comes into force.
Besides, Nyirenda said it is the MRA which administers the VAT Act but he is not sure if the revenue collector has powers to suspend the Act.
