The Truck Drivers Union in conjunction with Bulk Vehicles Operators has donated food and non-food related items worth 1.5 Million kwacha to Cyclone Freddy survivors in the area of Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu district.
The donation will support over 200 families who are displaced and are staying in two evacuation camps in the area namely; Golgotha and Mbulumbuzi.
Speaking to MIJ Online when donating the items, Grey Chisale General Secretary for Truck Drivers Union says the association decided to make the donation as it is concerned with the challenges that the Cyclone Freddy survivors are facing in the country.
Chisale added that the association is calling upon the government to timely maintain the roads network that was destroyed.
According to Elube Phiri, one of the survivors at Golgotha camp, they are facing many challenges that need assistance from the well-wishers.
Phiri further called upon the government to speed up the process of reallocating the Cyclone Freddy survivors to other places to avoid violating the rights of children who are not attending their lessons as the classes are being used as evacuation camps.
Golgotha camp has 123 families while Mbulumbuzi camp has 83 families.
