The Institute of Internal Auditors Malawi (AAIM) has vowed to deal with all unscrupulous Internal Auditors that are denting the good image of the profession in the country.
The vow from Alick Mwale, President of AAIM, was made earlier today during the official opening of the 2025 Governance Forum that the institute has organised in the Lakeshore district of Mangochi.
To run from 5th to 8th August 2025, the forum has been organised under a theme: “Governance and Internal Audit Synergy: Building Sustainable Solutions for Organisational Development.”
In an interview with MIJ Online, Mwale noted that the questionable conduct of some Internal Auditors is leading to poor financial performance and fall of some companies and organisations in the country.
Therefore to deal with the challenge, Mwale said his organisation is doing everything possible to deal with those involved in various internal auditing malpractices that are denting the image of the profession.
”As the Institute of Internal Auditors Malawi, in conjunction with our parent body; the institute of Internal Auditors Global, we have developed what we call a Model Internal Audit Act that will help us to ensure that all those practicing internal auditing are properly mandated and regulated in what they are doing.
”We are doing this because at the moment, some people are practicing as internal auditors, but they are not legally binding to become members of the Institute of Internal Auditors. So when they do not perform their work to their required standards, it becomes a problem for us to discipline them,” said Mwale.
Mwale further disclosed that consultations are underway with government and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the act is enacted into law.
Mwale has also said the institute is lining up a number of training programmes for its practicing Internal Auditors so as to improve the standards of internal auditing in the country.
