CFTC questions nineteen manufacturers on pricing mechanisms

The Competition and Fair-Trading Commission says it has questioned 19 manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services to explain the rationale behind their high price adjustments.

CFTC has been conducted market inspection following a directive by President Lazarus Chakwera to ensure traders are not taking advantage of the recent devaluation of the Kwacha to effect unreasonable price hikes.

A statement signed by Lloyds Vincent Nkhoma, Executive Director for the CFTC, says some of the price increments observed this far depict a trend of possible opportunism aimed at using the devaluation as a scapegoat to exploit consumers.

He has since disclosed that the commission is expanding the price monitoring exercise to districts and rural trading centers.
