Chakwera promises productive public spending

President Lazarus Chakwera says government will shift public spending into priority areas that boasts the country’s productivity.

He was speaking at the official launch of the  Extension of the Mangochi Portable Water Supply Project at Nkhudzi area in the district.

The water supply facility is expected to benefit over 92,000 people in Mangochi and surrounding areas.

Chakwera said access to clean water has far reaching benefits for the people of Mangochi who deserve it’s  access as they are surrounded with a major water source but lacked treatment infrastructure.

The Malawian leader said there is need to maximize utilisation of the available limited resources by ensuring that public expenditure is channeled towards productive areas of development.

“This is why I have instructed my newly appointed Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda to implement a public spending reconfiguration so that our resources are put to good use, in order to achieve economic growth and address government borrowing,” said Chakwera.

Meanwhile Brown Mpinganjira, Board Chairperson for the Southern Region Water Board said the board has already connected over 850 application while about 3,000 are on  waiting list to be cleared by November this year.

SRWB is implementing the project  with a $15.7 million loan financing from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economics Affairs.
