Malawi’s underdevelopment is likely to continue as a recent study by Opinion Hub has exposed incessant and growing corruption.
The study was aimed at finding out most common types of corruption, investigating major effects of corruption as well as to find outs most corrupt bodies in Malawi among others.
In making a presentation of the findings, Murry Siyasiya Co-Founder of Opinion Hub, it has been recalled that most people in the country are facing a number of socio-economic challenges caused by corruption, unemployment and poverty, among others.
He says among other things it has been established that the most types of corruption are misallocation of government funds, money laundering, bribery and theft of funds in parastatals.
According to Siyasiya, respondents who were drawn from a cross section of demographics based on academic qualification, age, marital status and origin feel that the country is making dismal efforts to end corruption.
Out of the 90 respondents engaged, 73 of them say they feel corruption remains a tall order in Malawi which translates to 81 percent.
The study also names in an order that government officials are perceived the most corrupt followed by politicians, police, Malawi Revenue Authority officers, ministers, lawyers as the most corrupt.
‘’It has been cited that the most cited causes of corruption in Malawi are greed which is tagged at 78 percent of the responses , poverty, politics and weak laws as well low salaries. Other respondents even feel that there is lack of stiff punishment as well as love for power, ‘’ he says.
