About five thousand farmers in the central region are in a dilemma following a decision by MDI, a renowned milk processing company has decided to stop purchasing milk.
The company which has for a long period been buying milk from dairy farmers in Dowa, Lilongwe, and Mchinji districts reportedly stopped its operations due to persistent power outages.
MIJ Online understands that due to the halt, farmers are losing more than 18,000 litres of milk which is equivalent to more than 6 million kwacha on daily basis.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Herbert Chagona, National Director for Malawi Milk Producers has said the situation has meant that the farmers have no immediate buyer, a situation that has subjected them to poverty.
Chagona has also said that because the company stopped its operations, the farmers are yet to collect their five-month dues under their bulking groups.
