Young people are being encouraged to get involved in the election process by learning about different candidates so they can make smart choices when voting in the September 16 general elections.
This message was shared in Blantyre during a meeting organized by the Institute for Policy Interaction – IPI, at Samaritan Trust where stakeholders engages young people and local community members.
This effort is part of the Malawi Electoral Support Project – MESP, which is supported by the United Nations Development Programme – UNDP.
Professor Nandini Patel, the executive director of IPI, said that by talking to candidates and knowing their plans, young people can make choices that are good for the country.
At the same time, Harvey Chimaliro, from the Concerned Youth Organisation, is asking young people to avoid violence and not spread false information about the elections.
Among other things, Chimwemwe Kandodo, head of political science department at the Catholic University of Malawi drilled the youths of their civic role.
During the interaction, Chikondi Mponda from the Malawi Electoral Commission also presented on changes on electoral roles and how the Blantyre office is reaching out to people.
