Minister Ibrahim Matola has emphasized the need for more investment in the energy sector to transform Malawi’s economic landscape.
The emphasis by Matola comes at a time world leaders and players in the global energy sector are convening at the 26th World Energy Congress underway in Rotterdam, Netherlands, organized by the World Energy Council.
The event has brought together over 200 speakers and more than 70 Ministers across the world, as well as over 7,000 international energy stakeholders.
Matola told MIJ Online that the event provides an opportunity for Malawi to lobby key leaders in the energy sector from around the world on investment towards increasing the country’s power generation capacity to drive its 2063 aspirations for industrialization.
According to Matola, the country has great potential in the sectors of agriculture, mining and tourism, among others, however to maximize this potential demands for improved and efficient power supply for operations.
“We need to explore every opportunity and seek additional financial and technical support to fulfil our vision of increased power generation capacity in order to achieve energy access for all Malawians and the industries that are the key drivers of the country’s economic growth,” said Matola .
The congress which runs from 22nd -25th April 2024, is being held under the theme ‘Redesigning Energy for People and Planet’, bringing together influential world and political leaders to discuss and find enabling solutions to the global energy challenges.
