The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi says it requires 18.5 billion kwacha to connect new customers every year as natural resources Committee of Parliament faults the company for extending Agreko’s illegal contract.
On Tuesday, the committee met with Escom officials where it was revealed that Escom needs about k18.5 billion to connect new customers each year while customers contribution in this period is only k4.9billion.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Clement Kanyama Acting Escom’s chief Executive Officer said some of these challenges are contributing to slow connection of customers to the grid.
He however disclosed that Escom will not be extending its contract with Agreko next year citing high prices as one of the reasons.
But Werani Chilenga, Natural resources committee of Parliament Chairperson faulted Escom’s new CEO for going ahead to extend a contract with Agreko without approval from
Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA).
Meanwhile, Clement Kanyama, Escom’s Acting Chief Executive Officer has told MIJ Online that Blantyre Water Board is owing Escom a sum of 19 billion kwacha.
