Economic experts in the country have described a recent plea by Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority- for Forex prioritization allocation to fuel importers as worrying.
In a letter addressed to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi signed by Henry Kachaje- Chief Executive Officer for Mera- the energy regulator is requesting for prioritization of foreign currency to fuel importers.
This comes at a time some parts of the country have been experiencing fuel shortages although the energy regulator insists it is a logistical challenge.
Commenting on the matter, Ralph Tseka Public Relations Officer for Reserve Bank of Malawi has said it is a normal process for Mera to make such requests.
Meanwhile, an economic expert, Milward Tobias has said the request exposes the magnitude of forex shortage.
Tobias has since predicated prolonged tougher times for Malawians as there is a likelihood that prices of goods and services will rise.
