Govt refuses to reduce tollgate fees

Government has said it will not reduce toll gate fees despite calls by various stakeholders for the charges to be reviewed.

Speaking to the media in Blantyre, Gospel Kazako, Minister of Information has said the stand also comes after they engaged concerned stakeholders.

But according to Kazako, the fees will not be reduced and that people must understand that the money collected will be put to good use.

He has since disclosed that government is taking steps to deal with a concern of minibus touts.

However, Coaxley Kamange, Chairperson of Minibus Owners Association of Malawi has said they will proceed with their stay away tomorrow because they find the charges too expensive.

The Association feels the set fees ranging from K3, 400 to K5, 100 are exorbitant.

The operators want the fees revised to K500 and K600 respectively.

Kazako says funds collected from toll gates will solely be used to improve the country’s roads.

He says, good roads provide a conducive environment for different economic activities hence a catalyst for national development.
