A group of concerned citizens, led by Tonex Banda, has revealed that it will hold demonstrations on 11 February aimed at forcing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to release the results of the Bwaila City Constituency election.
The group is also calling for the resignation of Lilongwe City Assembly boss, Lloyd Kadamanja, citing incompetence.
The MEC had announced the election for Bwaila Constituency in October last year and January this year, but the results are yet to be released.
The candidates in the running include Patrick Kabambe of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Mike Chizukira of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Henry Muyaya, an independent candidate.
According to Banda, the demonstration is prompted by the lack of representation in the constituency.
MEC had previously found that the envelope containing spoiled votes was tampered with, leading to suspicions of electoral irregularities.
As a result, the commission suspended the announcement of results.
Banda indicated that they want MEC to release the results and ensure that the democratic process is respected.
Unofficial results indicate that, Precious Kabambe of Malawi Congress Party(MCP) was leading with 8,199 surpassing Hellen Zalira of UTM who got 6,387 while Mike Chimzukira of Democratic Progressive Party – DPP got 7,794.
