Experts have expressed different views on government’s decision to introduce foreign languages in the country’s curriculum.
These views are bordering on intentions to introduce Portuguese and Swahili languages as subjects.
The debate has risen after the ministry of Education has said processes aimed introducing the languages are underway as per directive by president Lazarus Chakwera which was made in April this year.
Meanwhile, officials from the ministry of education have indicated that there are meeting various stakeholders on the matter.
In reaction, Lexon Ndalama, an eminent education rights campaigner, has said the decision will likely help Malawi to have improved relations with neighboring countries which will also boost trade partnerships.
But Ndalama, is of the view that, the subjects should not be compulsory.
However, Lucky Mbewe, a social commentator has questioned the relevance of the decision saying it will not improve the country’s education system which has many problems that needs addressing including lack of infrastructure and trained human resource.
