Malawian leaders criticized over ‘too much focus’ on divinity

Chipofya: The trend is worrying.

Commentators Victor Chipofya and Wonderful Mkhutche have accused elected leaders of using prayer to mask their incompetence and evade accountability for the mismanagement of the country’s affairs.

These growing concerns arise as leaders are consistently resorting to prayer during turbulent times.

In his remarks, Chipofya has emphasized that leaders, particularly politicians, use prayer to evade responsibility and fail to provide practical solutions to challenges.

“You see much as it is okay for people to be prayerful, no country has ever developed because of the same and when a leader publicly calls for prayers it simply means they have failed to lead,” said Chipofya.

On his part, Mkhutche has observed that authorities exploit the populace’s religious values, using prayer to hide incompetence and avoid accountability during socio-economic challenges.

“Our leaders know how most Malawians value religion and other beliefs and therefore use the same to run away from taking responsibility of their actions whenever something goes wrong,” observed Mkhutche.

While acknowledging the value of prayer, both commentators stress the importance of utilizing available resources for sustainable national development.
