Malawi’s annual inflation rate has declined to 21.1 percent in June 2026 from 23.4 percent recorded in May, representing a 2.3 percentage point drop, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO).
The latest Consumer Price Index report shows that food inflation fell to 14.7 percent in June from 17.6 percent in the previous month, while non-food inflation slightly declined to 32.1 percent from 33 percent.
However, the national month-to-month inflation rate increased to 0.1 percent in June from -0.2 percent in May.
NSO says food inflation on a monthly basis improved to -0.3 percent from -1.0 percent, while non-food inflation slowed to 0.7 percent from 1.0 percent during the same period.
In urban areas, the monthly inflation rate stood at -0.2 percent, driven by a 0.5 percent decline in food prices and a 0.2 percent increase in non-food prices.
Meanwhile, rural areas recorded a higher monthly inflation rate of 0.3 percent, mainly due to a 1.1 percent rise in non-food prices, despite a 0.2 percent decline in food prices.
