MCP, UTM others to rebrand ahead of fresh elections

The Malawi Congress Party, UTM, Peoples Party and Freedom parties are weighing the options of rebranding their coalition and go to the fresh presidential polls under one name. MIJ Online, has understood.

However, the parties are still non-committal on the structure of the coalition.

But spokespersons for both UTM and MCP Joseph Chidanti Malunga and Maurice Munthali respectively have maintained in separate interviews that talks are at an advanced stage.

The two are to lead the party.

“We are going to tell Malawians all the details they need to know including what name the coalition will be should our talks materialize fully,’’ said Munthali.

According to Munthali, there interests in the alliance are national and that they expect a more distributed voting pattern in the next elections.

Meanwhile, a political analyst, George Phiri perceives the looming alliance as having an upper hand in the polls.

Their reported alliance comes weeks after the DPP and UDF made known of an alliance.

Parties are glaring at alliances in the wake of the proposed adoption of the 50+1 voting threshold which the Constitutional Court recommended in February when making a ruling over the presidential elections case.
