President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has spoken strongly against corruption and a commitment to rebuild Malawi in his first address as Malawi’s 7th Head of State.
Mutharika’s inaugural speech today pledged to give no room to perpetrators of corruption, both government officials and party loyalists.
“Government is not a political party. Government is not a night club. Being in government is about serving the people,”
He added, “This attitude that now we are in government and that we are going to be rich is destroying this country. Vice president and I want to bring sanity in government. We will clean up the house with integrity.”
The leader for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) also urged party officials to serve Malawians wholeheartedly.
The 7th president further made a commitment to address economic challenges rocking the country with a call for patience, discipline and harkwork.
“We have inherited a nation full of crisis. There is no food, forex, fuel and the cost of living is high,” he lamented.
He however said the crisis is human-made hence can be addressed in human capacity.
“We will fix this country but fixing it will not be easy. It is easy to destroy because someone has built but difficult to build what somebody has destroyed,” said Mutharika.
Mutharika also said he is not promising milk and honey but hard-work, tough and painful decisions.
Meanwhile, an entrepreneur-cum-activist, Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira has expressed confidence in Mutharika’s regime that it stands a chance to revamp the economy.
But he tips Mutharika to prioritising local manufacturing.
“My main prayer is that the president should embrace local manufacturing as a way of stabilizing our economy and to grow forex,” said Kachamba.
On his part, Ras David Chikomeni Chirwa, a member of Rastafarian community appealed to the new president to legalise cultivation of Indian Hemp.
“We have cannabis in this country which if taken seriously can bring forex in our country,” said Chirwa.
Malawians are eagerly awaiting for change which Mutharika and his party DPP have been proclaiming which include good economy and an end to corruption.
