Thirty-six Malawians have been issued a dual citizenship by the department of Immigration and Citizenship services.
The immigration department commenced processing of dual citizenship status in January this year after Malawi gazette the Duo citizenship into a law in November 2021.
Spokesperson for the department Wellington Chiponde has told MIJ Online that there is a high demand for dual citizenship as the department has received applications from those requiring to attain the status.
Chiponde has since disclosed that 36 Malawians have been issued dual citizenship, a move will assist them reclaim their lost Malawian citizenship.
The Malawi National Assembly passed the Malawi Citizenship Amendment Bill to amend the 1966 Citizenship Act, allowing persons of full age and capacity to hold citizenship of another country in addition to their Malawi citizenship.
The dual citizenship bill was assented into law in March 2019 and dual citizenship regulations were gazetted in November 2021.
