The Defence and Security Committee of parliament says it will investigate reports that the National Registration Bureau is planning to remove some features on the National Identity Card.

It follows claims by Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives that NRB is planning to remove the microchip and the expiry date on the IDs.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director for CDEDI has said it expects the committee to act on the matter hence penning it.

Meanwhile, Ralph Jooma, Chairperson for the parliamentary committee has confirmed to MIJ Online receipt of the letter.

Jooma has told us that the committee will summon the leadership of the bureau to hear its side on the allegations.

The leadership of the bureau is yet to comment on the matter.
