The Association of Social Workers in Malawi (ASWiM), has launched a nationwide Human Resource Assessment aimed at collecting comprehensive data on social workers across the country.
The exercise is underway and runs until August 2026.
In an interview with MIJ Online, ASWiM President Joseph Kalelo, said the assessment seeks to generate reliable information on the social work profession in Malawi to support workforce planning, professional development, and evidence-based policymaking.
The exercise will gather data on graduates produced by training institutions at certificate, diploma, bachelor’s degree, and postgraduate levels.
It will also collect information on social workers currently practicing and those who have previously worked in various sectors.
ASWiM says the assessment targets individuals who hold qualifications in social work or social welfare, whether they are currently employed in the profession or not.
Kalelo said the exercise has also been extended to include paraprofessionals such as Community Child Protection Workers (CPWs) and certificate holders in social work and social welfare.
ASWiM is conducting the assessment in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, and with support from UNICEF Malawi.
Established in 2019 and affiliated with the International Federation of Social Workers, ASWiM is the national professional body for social workers in Malawi.
