Education stakeholders have hailed the School – Based Mentorship Program (SEMPro) for increasing opportunities for teachers as well as enhancing students learning outcomes in Chiradzulu district.
This is a program being implemented by the Ministry of Education through Edukans Foundation Malawi with funding from UNICEF and Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in line with the government development blue print Malawi 2063 and National Education Sector Investment Plan (NESIP) of 2020 and Together, we Trusted Education Solution (TES).
Speaking after the training of 190 additional teachers’ mentors drawn from 38 new schools, Chiradzulu District Education Manager, Allan Machemba at Chiradzulu Teachers Training College said the project has been the good tool of improving education as both teachers and learners are taken on board with one goal of improving quality of education.
Machemba said “Todays number has added to teacher mentors to the total of 390 across the 78 schools in the district which pleased me. The training package comprises mentorship training workshops and guided mentorship support visits and distribution of training manuals and materials. The mentorship of teachers focuses on two modules Practicing Active Teaching and Lifelong Learning Skill for Teachers Modules,’’he said.
District Coordinating Primary Education Advisor, Riech Bon Gopanikufa said the training materials compliment the Ministry of Education continuing professional development framework by providing teacher mentors and teacher mentees with skills effective teaching and lifelong learning using participatory and interactive methodologies.
One of the master trainers for the program who is also a lecturer at Chiradzulu Teachers Training College, Wilson Gunde said schools have positively embraced the mentorship program with enthusiasm.

SEMPro Executive director, Limbani Nsapato said the program which has a budget K500 million, aims at improved opportunities for children through mentorship program for teachers and students leading to greater job satisfaction and improved learning outcome.
Edukans Foundation Malawi project coordinator, Prescott Thawe said before the program of teacher mentor who include head teachers, section heads and departmental heads were not aware of the difference between counseling, disciplining and mentorship.
