The Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) has called on treasury to speed up the processing of payments to the Malawi Prison Services.
The call by Victor Mhango, Executive Director of CHREAA follow reports of insufficient food supply in the country’s prisons due to delayed payment of goods and services through the IFMIS.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Mhango described the development as an infringement on the right to food for the prisoners.
Mhango has since called on the government to fast-track the payment to the prison department.
Meanwhile, Williams Banda, spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said most of the payments for the government ministries, departments, and agencies including the Malawi Police Service have been processed.
Banda said if there are any departments that are facing challenges in accessing the payments they can engage treasury.
