Authorities have admitted that there is still a huge communication gap between persons with hearing impairments and the general public in the country.
As a result of the admission, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority in conjunction with the Ministry of Education (MoE) through the Directorate of Inclusive Education (DIE) have joined forces to assist with formulation of sign language clubs in schools.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Rachael Phiri Principal Secretary for Basic Education in the Ministry of Education said the deaf community is still facing challenges due to lack of communication in the society.
According to Phiru, the new concept of having sign language clubs will chiefly help to ensure connectivity of persons with disability without hitches.
And on his part, Daud Suleman Director General for MACRA said the project will help to foster the realisation of communication to be enjoyed by every citizen regardless of their disabilities or geographical position.
