Tobacco marketing season to close next month

Malawi is expected to close this year’s tobacco marketing season on 12 August after 20 weeks of sales.

This comes as Chinkhoma floors officially closed its market yesterday 20th July.

Spokesperson for Tobacco Commission Telephorus Chigwenembe has told MIJ Online that Lilongwe and Limbe markets will be closed on 5 August while Mzuzu will close on 12 August as there is still significant volumes of tobacco coming to the floors.

Meanwhile as of 15th July Malawi has sold 78 million kilograms of tobacco, generating about $156 million in 16 weeks of sales.

Chigwenembe has described the market so far as a success in regards to better prices being offered on the market at an average of 2 US Dollars.

The commission has since expressed optimism of reaching its expected target of 100 million kilograms at the end of the marketing season.
