Two weeks required in inspection of confiscated containers

The Malawi Police Service has stated that it will require fifteen days to complete the process of opening and inspecting containers confiscated during the refugee relocation operation to Dzaleka refugee camp.

As of the second day of this operation, only five out of the one hundred and twenty-five confiscated containers have been opened and searched at Mgona market in Lilongwe.

Senior Superintendent Peter Kalaya, the Public Relations Officer of the service, has told MIJ Online that some refugees were engaged in business activities without proper licenses, and others faced immigration-related issues.

Kalaya, said the police service is working in cooperation with the Department of Immigration and the Malawi Revenue Authority to address the challenges encountered during this second day of the operation.

On a related note, Alexander Maseko, the Acting Regional Immigration Officer for the center, revealed that certain refugees claiming ownership of the containers lack valid documentation.
