The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has called for the need to improve the quality of education of children in Malawi.
UNICEF Country Representative- Rudolf Schwenk said this when he toured Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) to appreciate what the institute is doing in implementing a project on training journalists and upcoming journalists on Child Rights Reporting.
The project is being funded by UNICEF.
Schwenk said as much as there is progress that has been registered in protecting the rights of children, there is a lot that needs to be done.
Schwenk said there is a need to improve the quality of education so that more girls should go to school and a lot of children should be able to attend secondary school.
He added that there is a need to create more opportunities for young people as one way of improving their lives.
Meanwhile, Schwenk has commended the media on its role in reporting on child rights issues.
Schwenk, however, has called on the media to hold accountable authorities if they are failing to respect the rights of children.
