The University of Malawi has described the latest ranking of sub-Saharan African universities by Times Higher Education as not being a true reflection of education status in Malawi.
The survey ranks the Malawi University of Science and Technology -MUST as the top university in the country and in 29 position in the region.
But speaking to MIJ Online, Dr. Sundizwayo Madise, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Unima says it will be improper to generalize the findings because other universities in the country were not approached to participate in the study.
While congratulating MUST, Dr. Madise believes that the findings would have been fair if other universities like MUBAS, KuHes, Mzuni, and Luanar participated in the survey.
“You cannot rate MUST the best here in Malawi while it was the only local university that participated,” said Madise.
On the other hand, James Mphande -spokesperson for MUST has attributed the findings as a motivation for the university’s excellence.
“It is a clear indication that we are doing good as a university beside limited resources in our 9 years of existence,” Mphande said.
Times Higher Education research involved 88 universities from sub-Saharan Africa and ranked them based on the teaching and learning methodology.
