This comes as pressure keeps mounting on the government to deal with the current food crisis situation as some parts of the country are faced with hunger.
This comes as reports are also rife that there is a shortage of maize and the grains have also faced a hike in Admarc depots.
Admarc announced a hike from K250 to K310 per kilogram, a decision they said is meant to help acquire more maize to sustain the country’s depots.
In an interview, Spokesperson in the ministry of Agriculture, Pricilla Mateyu insisted that the government still ensuring that there is the availability of maize in the country.
Mateyu disclosed that the government intends to purchase maize from outside the country as one of the efforts to sustain the supply of the grains on the market.
However, the Consumers Association of Malawi Executive Director John Kapito has described the decisions that the ministry of agriculture has been making as ill-timed.
According to Kapito, the government has failed to acquire maize from people because it was offering a low price.
Meanwhile, ADMARC Executive Director Felix Jumbe has maintained that they are aware that some depots have no maize saying they will start a distribution exercise in due course.
