The Association for Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has expressed deep concern over the increased cases of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism in the country.
This comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Albinism Awareness Day.
The Association has indicated that in this month of June alone they have two cases where some unscrupulous individuals were tampering with graveyards for person with albinism.
Speaking to MIJ Online Young Muhamba, President for Association for Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) said that persons with albinism live in a precarious environment marked by attacks, killings and lack of access to basic services.
Muhamba expressed dismay with the slow pace of investigation and prosecution of cases involving persons with albinism, with 29 cases still pending in courts for over two years.
Meanwhile Muhamba has urged the Malawi Police Service to expedite the investigation and prosecution of these cases, especially as the country approaches the election period.
And on her part, Jean Sendeza Minister of Gender, reaffirmed government efforts in protecting persons with albinism.
Sendeza indicated that they have various initiatives that protect persons with albinism including construction of their proper houses.
