Three young children have died in rivers in Mulanje, authorities say.
The incidents occurred within a span of just a few days.
On October 21, 2025, 7-year-old Tawina James drowned in the Thuchira river.
Just five days later, two brothers, 10-year-old Maxwell Thonyiwa and 8-year-old Francis Walani, lost their lives in the Lichenya river.
Mulanje Police Station’s Public Relations Officer, Innocent Moses, is urging parents and guardians to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their children, especially during this hot weather when many are tempted to swim in rivers.
“Drowning is a preventable tragedy, and we appeal to parents and caregivers to take necessary precautions to ensure their children’s safety,” Moses said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that heatwaves increase the risk of drowning, as people seek water for relief and spend more time in and around it.
