The Forum for National Development led by Fryson Chodzi and the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) led by Robert Mkwezalamba have commended ongoing efforts to restore the rule of law following the arrest of individuals linked to the “Zikwanje” network accused of political violence.
The two organisations said there are no human rights violations in the arrests, contrary to claims by some sections of society, noting that most suspects have been granted bail but are being re-arrested because they are connected to several other cases as new charges emerge.
According to Mkwezalamba this is part of the normal legal process and urged the public to allow the law to take its course while ensuring that justice is served for both the suspects and the victims.
Mkwezalamba said the crackdown marks an important step in dismantling organized violence that has undermined democracy and silenced citizens for years.
The two groups have also called for coordinated investigations by the Malawi Police Service, ACB, and MHRC to trace funding sources and possible foreign interference.
