Concerns over girls’ interest in Science subjects escalate

An eminent statics expert has blamed disinterest of Science subjects by female scholars to lack of motivation.

Halima Twabi a Statistics lecturer at Chancellor College has told MIJ Online female scholars shun Science subjects for lack of exposure to women scientists.

“There is a lack of motivation and role models for girls. This has led to a general lack of interest in girls to opt for science subjects,’’ said Twabi.

Twabi: ‘’ What we are doing is to deal with the perceptions that people have on who would pursue careers in science. If we deal with this challenge, we will also be able as a country to have more girls in this field,” she said.

Meanwhile, ministry of education spokesperson Lindiwe Chide has said there is still a relative improvement on the matter arguing that should this continue, it will be a landmark breakthrough of having more women in the field.

The sentiments come as Malawi joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Sciences on Tuesday.

The Day was set aside by EU Women in 2015-with the essence of recognizing the role of women they play in Science and Technology all over the world.
