Government has directed the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) to investigate allegations of cement hoarding by traders in the country.
This decision comes amid a severe cement shortage in the country which has led to a huge price hike, with a bag of cement now costing nearly K40,000.
Meanwhile, Government officials and stakeholders recently met in Lilongwe to discuss the cement shortage and its causes.
The meeting aimed to find solutions to the problem and stabilize the market.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Patrick Botha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Trade and Industry, said that the CFTC has been tasked to investigate traders who may be hoarding cement to make excessive profits.
Botha expressed confidence that the cement supply will improve in the coming weeks and that sellers will refrain from unjustified price hikes.
