The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has launched investigations into the alleged sexual harassment of a suspect by a Police Officer at Lilongwe Area 3 Police Station.
It is alleged that a 17-year-old girl from Biwi, in Lilongwe was sexually harassed by an Officer on Sunday, when she was invited for questioning over a stolen mobile phone which she bought.
According to the girl, who later lodged a complaint with the Commission, one Police Officer from the CID section at Area 3 demanded sex from her in exchange with the said stolen phone.
Kate Kujaliwa, MHRC Public Relations Officer has confirmed receiving the complaint.
“I can confirm that we have received this complaint, that a female suspect was sexually harassed at Lilongwe Police Station, but I cannot not divulge more information at this stage as it may jeopardize our investigation” said Kujaliwa.
But Hastings Chigalu, Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer has asked for more time to follow up on the issue.
