Members of Parliament are demanding government to close Dzaleka refugee camp as most refugees are failing to voluntarily repatriate even after peace has returned in their respective countries.
In his contribution, Owen Chomanika Chikwawa North Legislator said it is unfortunate that the country is spending a lot of money that can support Malawians in remote areas.
According to Chomanika it is disheartening that some refugees have stayed over 24 years at Dzaleka refugee camp which he says shows that they do not intend to return to their countries.
Chomanika added by questioning why NGOs are spending up to 8 million dollars to a population of 52 thousand refugees at Dzaleka camp at the expense of poor Malawians.
Meanwhile in an interview with MIJ Online, Victoria Kingston Vice Chairperson for International Relations Committee of parliament concurred with most legislators that the camp has congested and there is need to come up with intervention contain the situation.
Commenting on the matter, Richard Chimwendo Banda, leader of the house who is also minister of homeland security admitted that there is congestion at Dzaleka camp which stands as risk for some diseases.
However, Banda was quick to mention that government has no definite date that they will be closing Dzaleka camp.
